For the first time in her life, Melody felt beautiful. She wore make up to cover all her acne and imperfections. However being the only teenager with braces made her feel insecure about her smile. Her glasses were swapped for contact lenses. Her normally frizzy hair was elegantly curled and sitting on her shoulders. The dress her mother had bought her was gorgeous - it was a light pink coloured dress that sat just above her knee. It was strapless and had layers of tulle under it. Melody felt like a ballerina.
Melody heard a knock on her bedroom door and saw her mother smiling at her.
"My little Mel has grown up."
Melody simply smiled back and looked at herself in my mirror. Tomorrow, she'd wake up and go back to being the nerdy girl again. She heard a knock at the front door and stood up, hurrying past her mum in her tracks. Stopping at the door, Mel fixed her hair and opened the door.
Bruno was wearing a tuxedo with a deep blue tie. His eyes lit up when he saw Melody, she looked stunning. He'd never seen her look so beautiful.
She did a twirl. "Soo, whatdaya think?"
"You look absolutely amazing." replied Bruno. He gave her a hug. Melody felt good to know she was getting really noticed by him.
Melody's mum & dad walked into the room. This was the first time they'd meet Bruno. Mel & Bruno weren't exactly dating. She did like Bruno though. She got the feeling he liked her back, but no boys had ever liked her. So when Bruno asked her to the school dance, she was shocked.
"But why?" she asked. "There's plenty of other girls at this school, besides me."
When she said this to him, Bruno shrugged his shoulders. "I think there's more to you then meets the eye."
Bruno shook hands with both of Mel's parents. "Mr and Mrs Stewart, I'm Peter, you can call me Bruno."
"Well Bruno, it's nice to finally meet the young man my daughter can't stop talking about." said Melody’s father. She felt herself going red.
"Okay dad, we had better go." Brooke tried to rush away from her embarassing father. She loved him with all her heart, they always things together and she could tell him anything. He knew he had embarrassed her, so he pretended to zip his lips.
Bruno drove Melody to the dance in his dads old Chevy. It was a slightly bumpy ride, but Melody didn't mind. When they arrived, Bruno opened the door for her and the sky lit beach was revealed. There were tiki lights and a DJ and hundreds of teenagers from their school in their pretty dresses and formal tuxes. Many of them weren’t wearing shoes because of the sand, but it wasn’t uncommon in Hawaii.
Melody could feel eyes staring at her all night. They were either wondering who that girl was or what Bruno Hernandez was doing with her. They danced and laughed during the night. Bruno got up on stage and performed a few covers of some popular songs with his band, the School Boys. When he got off stage, Melody couldn’t help but smile.
“What? Was it that bad?” he asked.
“No, it was perfect! I know you’re gonna make it big some day.”
“That’s really sweet of you, but I highly doubt that will happen.”
“Stop being modest” said Melody. “I never knew you could sing like that”. Bruno shrugged his shoulders.
“I’m planning on moving to New York next year… Try get a few demo’s out to a few people, but I guess whatever happens, happens.”
Melody nodded as she listened to Bruno talk. About his fathers doo-wop club, and when he used to impersonate Elvis. How he grew up surrounded by a vast of music. It all sounded amazing. Bruno and Melody went for a walk along the beach. The sounds of music at the dance were floating in the air behind them.
“So what do you want to do when you finish school?” asked Bruno. Mel was looking up at the stars. She looked to Bruno, who was doing the same thing.
“I’m not sure.” She responded. “My dad wants me to go off and explore the world with him when I finish school. See the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House…” Melody trailed off in her thoughts.
“It’s gonna be really nice. Nothing makes me happier then seeing him happy.”
Bruno looked at Melody. The light from the moon shun on her face. It made her appear to sparkle, just like all the stars around them.
“But what about you? What makes you happy?” asked Bruno.
“I don’t know… Maybe I want to get into fashion design. Everyone at school thinks my style is… weird. But I would call it unique.”
“You’re very unique” said Bruno. Melody felt herself blush. What was the likelihood that a guy as sweet and charming as Bruno would ask her to the dance?
They stopped walking and stood at the waters edge. The sounds of the waves crashing were calming.
“You’re the only one that gets me, Bruno.” Said Melody. “Everyone judges me before they get to know me. I don’t understand. But you… you make me feel special. You’re different.”
Bruno grabbed her hand. She looked up at him, and he was smiling. However, she saw something behind his eyes that were telling a different story. She shook off the thought when he kissed her on the cheek. She felt the blood rush to her cheeks as they went red.
“What was that for?” she asked.
“No reason.” Replied Bruno. Melody bit her lip, and giggled to herself. Bruno started laughing at her.
“What’s so funny?!” she said, lightly hitting him across the arm.
“You’re so cute, it was just a kiss on the cheek!”
“Shush you.” She stuck her tongue out at him and continued to laugh. She felt Bruno place his hands on the side of her body, he stepped in towards her. He looked at her lips and moved his face closer to hers. Melody could feel him breathing on her.
“How do you feel now?” he whispered.
“Nervous.” Replied Melody. But she smiled.
Bruno leaned in and lightly kissed her on her lips. It didn’t last long, but it felt like an eternity to Melody. It would forever be her first kiss, something that she wouldn’t forget. It was beautiful.
They walked back towards the dance when a group of Bruno’s friends approached them.
“Excuse me miss.”
Melody fluttered her eyes open to see a woman in her face. She had bleach blonde hair that was up in a ponytail and blue eyes.
“We need you to put your seatbelt on for landing now. I’m sorry to have to wake you.”
“No, it’s fine. Thank-you.” Replied Melody. The lady walked away. Melody looked around the small aircraft. Soon her plane would land in NYC and everything would change. Her past would be left behind in an effort to start over. But she kept having dreams that made it hard to forget that. She kept dreaming of the night of her high school dance, even though it was nearly 6 years in the past. Why she kept having flashbacks of that night, she didn’t know.
As the plane landed and she stepped out into the airport, she looked around. “Welcome home”, she thought.
