I woke up in the same position I fell asleep; in his arms.
“Bruno.” I whispered, he didn’t budge. “Bruno.” I said again and patted his arm that was wrapped around my stomach.
“Huh, what?” he asked coming awake.
“I need to use the bathroom.”
“Oh oh, sorry.” he loosened his grip on me and I slid out of bed. I used the bathroom and slid back in.
“Everything okay?” he asked with his eyes closed.
“Yeah.” I said holding my stomach.
“Stomach hurt, you okay, baby?” he asked when he saw I was gripping my stomach.
“No, I’m good.” I said in pain.
“You’re obviously not.”
I let out a breath, “Whew, I’m good now.” I smiled, and relaxed because the pain actually was gone.
“Oh hey what happened to your forehead?” I asked rubbing my finger over the lump.
“I got in a fight with my beautiful wife…and a microphone..”
“Yeah, about that…I’m sorry. About the shoe too.”
“It’s okay, I deserved it.” he gave me a light kiss on my stitched up cheek. “How about some breakfast for that bundle of love in there.” he said rubbing my stomach.
“Alright.” I said and sat up.
“Where you going?” he asked me.
“To make us some food.”
“Nope, that’s my job. During this whole nine months, and the rest of our lives, I’m gonna be here for you. Get you anything you need, want or desire.”
“Aw, okay.” I smiled. “Oh, but you don’t know where everything is.”
“I have eyes, I can look for things.” I whistled once and Hoolie ran upstairs.
“He likes to be assistant cook when he smells food. Thought it’d be easier for you with him up here.”
“Thanks.” he smiled walked slowly past Hoolie and out of my room.
“C’mon.” I said and Hoolie hopped up in the bed. He laid where Bruno was looked up at me. “What?” he scooted closer and put a paw on my arm. “Why are you looking at me like that?” he started crying a little, then turned his head and looked downstairs. “He’s okay, Hoolie.” he barked twice, Bruno appeared in the door.
“Everything okay?” he asked.
“Yes, go ahead.” I smiled. He looked at Hoolie once and went back downstairs.
“See Hoolie, he cares, no more heart break.” He gave me a look like, ‘whatever’. I grabbed Hoolie’s head and kissed him on top of his nose. He licked my face and snuggled in under my chin. I closed my eyes and rubbed his back. We laid there listening to the noises from downstairs. I guess he found my radio because music was coming from down there too. I was just about to drift away when I heard Bruno yell.
“Fuck!” Hoolie’s ears pinched up.
“Go check on him.” I said and he lunged off my bed and down the stairs.
“Fuck!” I yelled. I’m making pancakes and I put way too much vanilla in the mix. Hoolie was suddenly in the doorway. He starred at me.
“Shh, go somewhere.” I said and tried to ignore him. I wiped my forehead but forgot I had pancake mix on my hand, now it’s on my face. I turned on the water and it splashed everywhere! On me, on the floor and on the counter.
“Ugh. I know I can’t cook, why am I trying? Right, ‘cause I love her.” I turned on the stove and put a little oil in the pan. I turned on the oven to get it warmed. I started to mix the pancake mix again. I added more mix and water to try and even out the vanilla. I smelled something. I turned around, there was smoke coming out of the pan, it’s burning. I poured some mix on there, this one’s gonna be huge. It filled up the whole pan. I pulled the cinnamon rolls out of the fridge and put them on a cookie sheet. I put them in the oven.
“Spatula, spatula, spatula.” I need to flip the pancake. I found one, but it was too late. When I flipped it, the under side was black.
“Damn.” I got a plate and put it on there after it was done. I put two more blobs of mix in the pan. I dry mix on my face and arms. I keep slipping a little on the water puddle on the floor, gotta wipe it after I’m done. Those pancakes come out okay, I put some more in. I made WAY too much mix. There’s probably about 50 pancakes and still some mix left. The pan is empty, I put some more oil in, oops too much. I open the oven and check on the rolls. I take the pot holder and throw it on the counter. I walk back to grab the bowl. The oven mitt ended up in the pan and burner and caught on fire.
“SHIT!” I yelled. I ran to grab a towel, but slip on the water and fall forwards into the counter. The bowl of pancake mix flips and lands on my head, Hoolie starts barking like crazy.
“Shh!” I yell.
All I hear is Hoolie barking and Bruno yelling. I hop out of bed and run downstairs. Fire is coming from my stove, and it’s on the curtains over one of my kitchen windows.
“Whoa, what’s going on?!” Smoke is everywhere, Bruno is on the ground with white mix on him.
“I’m so sorry!” he said hopping up. He tossed the bowl off, mix is everywhere. He turned on the water and tried putting it in bowls and dumping it on the fire, it didn’t help. The fire is quickly starting to spread. I call 9-1-1. They get here in 5 minutes. When they put the fire out that whole wall is black, even on the second floor, which is where the bathroom is. There are wholes in the wall where the fire burned through. I stood there looking at what he did. I thanked the firemen and they left. I looked at Bruno.
“What happened? If you needed help you should have told me!”
“I thought I could do it.”
“Oh my god, what am I supposed to do Bruno?”
“I’m sorry I don’t know.”
“My kitchen, my bathroom! I cant stay here, with wholes in my wall and no pluming.”
“Stay with me.” he said.
“No, I can’t put you out.”
“You wouldn’t be, I want you there.”
“What about Hoolie?”
“I’m gonna have to live with him sooner or later, why not get used to it.”
“I don’t know.” I said rubbing my head.
“Like you said, you can’t stay here.”
“Ugh, fine!” I let out a sigh.
“Don’t be so excited about it.” he said hurt.
“I just don’t know how I’m gonna pay for all this to be remodeled, if it’ll have to be taken down, I just-”
“Babe, listen.” he said shushing me. “I meant permanently.” he said smiling.
“Like, move in, live together share everything.”
“That’s kind the whole definition, yeah.”
“Are you sure, you’re ready for that kind of commitment?”
“Well, we’re already married and expecting a child, so, this is kinda something we skipped.” I laughed a little.
“Alright.” I smiled.
“Really?!” he asked excited.
“Ha ha yeah.” I smiled he grabbed me in a hug.
“Too tight!” I squeezed out.
“Sorry!” he let go. “Let’s go pack!” he said excited.
“I’ve never seen you like this before.”
“I’ve never been this excited.”
“NICHOLLE?!” Loba yelled outside. I walked in the doorway. “What the hell happened? There’s smoke coming off your house! Are you okay?”
“Yeah, Bruno tried to make me breakfast.”
“Oh my god!” she laughed walking in. she dropped her smile when she saw him standing there.
“…Hey..” she said trying not to laugh. He pouted and stomped away dramatically, we all laughed including Bruno.
“So you need to crash at my place?”
“No, actually I’m moving in with Bruno.”
“Yeah.” Bruno smiled.
“Help me pack?” I asked.
“Of course.” she said not really interested. I saw past her that Ryan pulled up in his truck.
“Ugh, I’ll deal with this, why don’t you guys go start. And you,” I pointed at Bruno, “stay out of my underwear drawer.” I squinted my eyes a little and he smiled. I walked outside slowly with my hands on my hips.
“What do you want? I asked. The wind was blowing it blew my hair around, out of my eyes.
“What happened to your house?”
“Bruno made me, well tried to make me breakfast.”
“You found Bruno? Are you okay?”
“Fine.” I said through closed teeth.
“Need any help cleaning? Can you still live here?”
“No, I’m moving out.”
“You found somewhere already?”
“I’m gonna move in with Bruno.” he got mad.
“Oh, can I help pack?”
“I guess.” I said after a minute.
“I’m really sorry about last night.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Hug?” he asked. I didn’t answer him, he slid his arms through my arms, I took my right arm and put it behind his head. I pulled away and looked at him. I couldn’t help to smile, he looked so sad.
“What?” he asked.
“Nothing.” I shook my head.
“Well come on.” he said smiling. We walked inside and upstairs.
Bruno had a red lacy thong in his hands.
“What are you doing?!” I laughed walking over to him. He shoved it in his pocket and stood up.
“What?” he smiled blushing.
“I thought I told you to stay out of my underwear!”
“Give it back.”
He shook his head smiling. I leaned in and whispered in his ear, “If I don’t get it back, I can’t wear it.” I said and kissed his ear lobe. He shivered and gave it to me.
“That’s what I thought.” I smiled. Loba walked in from the closet and looked at Ryan.
“Hi.” he said smiling.
“Hey.” she smiled. She looked at me.
“¿Quién es este?” <who is this?> she asked me.
“Mi amigo de Hawaii. Ryan, this is Loba.” <My friend from Hawaii.>
“Loba?” he asked.
“Well, actually Whitney.”
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“Same.” they shook hands.
“Babe.” I said.
“Yeah.” Ryan and Bruno said at the same time.
“Right.” Ryan said a little embarrassed, Bruno looked mad.
“Creo que tienes que hablar con él.” <I think you need to talk to him.> I said to Bruno.
“I know.” he said folding a shirt.
“If you wanna talk about me I can leave.” Ryan said hurt.
“Oh shut up, no one’s talking about you.” I smiled at him.
“Come talk to me for a minute.” Bruno said and him and Ryan went downstairs.
“So that’s Ryan from Hawaii.” she said closing a box.
“Yup, that’s him.”
“Did old feelings stir up after seeing him?”
“Of course! But what can I do about them?”
“Nothing now.” she said folding my bed sheets. A few hours later everything was packed. I didn’t have or need much. Ryan and Bruno came upstairs with no shirts on. I couldn’t stop starring at them.
“It got a little hot.” Ryan said.
“Yeah.” I chuckled a little. A while ago, Ryan took Bruno to go get his jeep. We loaded everything into Bruno’s car. Hoolie jumped in the back, I closed the door. I turned around to look at my house.
“So many memories.” Loba said giving me a hug.
“Again I’m sorry!”
“It’s not your fault babe.”
“Yes it is!” he said.
“So um, I’ll call you tomorrow, maybe some shopping?”
“Yeah. Sounds good.”
“This doesn’t have to end here! Cook out at my place, our place tonight!” Bruno said and kissed me on my forehead.
“Welcome home party too?” Ryan asked.
“Sure! Call everyone!” Bruno said. We each got in our cars.
“I’ll text you the address.” I yelled to Loba.
“Alright!” she smiled and drove off.
“Later Bro.” Ryan said out of his window next to us, him and Bruno did a shake then he drove off.
“So are you ready?” he asked, I looked at Hoolie, he had practically his whole body out of the side of the car looking at the house. I looked at my house.
“I guess.” he put the car in drive and grabbed my hand. It took about 20 minutes to get to his house.
“Wow!” his place was huge. “You live here?” I asked.
“No,” I looked at him, “We live here.” I smiled and kissed him. We got out and Hoolie went running.
“Aren’t you gonna get him?” he asked me, he’s only going to the door. I turned around and sure enough he was sitting there waiting for us. We grabbed some boxes and walked towards his house. He unlocked the door and we went in.
“Oh my god! It’s huge!” I said starring at the ceiling. He was holding back a laugh. “O
