”Nana….that happens to me all the time…” Noe told her grandmother.
”I know, Noe. It’s sad that it happens.” she told her granddaughter.
”But grandpa was so sweet, Nana. Was there ever a time when he wasn’t there for you?” Miley asked.
”Oh, there were plenty of times. But around that time he always there.” she told her granddaughters.
”Oh…but you were going on tour with him? Nana…mama says never to do that…” Noe said.
”No, no…Nohua…I was just visiting. I went home after another show…” she told het.
”Nana…were the shows big? Like the ones we went to when we were little when we couldn’t see or hear?” Miley asked.
”Oh….girls…they were very small. You could hear yourself think then….” Zulema answered.
Zulema sat down next to Bruno in a cushy couch at the small night club early in the evening watching him drink a bottle of water. ”Are you nervous, Bruno?” she asked him.
”Naw…I think this is gonna be good…I mean..it’s a small place so it should be good…” he told her.
”It makes me nervous.” she told him. ”But..going to the airport makes me nervous.” she laughed.
”I’m sorry that happened, Z. That was horrible.”
”I don’t know why it made me so upset. I just have to forget about it. It’ll happen on the way back to the city too. I know it.” she sighed. ”But that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to see you!” she said wrapping her arms around him excitedly kissing him on the cheek. ”You’re going to be so good tonight.” He turned around facing her taking a hold of the necklace around her neck.
”I know it will.” he said standing up.
”Where are you going?” she asked him.
”Just stay there. I’ll be back.” he told her. She grabbed her phone pretending to be busy checking her facebook and texting Stephanie while she watched Bruno and his band play with the instruments before the building opened. He started singing some randomness before everything started. How does he do this? Shit. God. She thought to herself watching him sing his heart out to no one in particular. ”Z…I’m gotta dedicate this one to you….” he said to her starting to sing I like big butts.
”Shut up!” she laughed at him booing. ”I don’t have a big butt…” she said as he jumped off the stage weaving his way through the small crowd of staff members and stage technicians.
”You’re right..it’s huge.” he told her squeezing her butt.
”But I thought you were a boob guy?” she asked.
”But if you’re mine I can have both…” he said hugging her tightly making her chest push against him.
”You’re so gross, Bruno.” she said pushing him away. ”And you’re really sweaty.”
”Yeah…I know…” he said taking a swig of her water bottle wiping his forehead seeing another girl walk up to them. ”Z…this is Libby…she’s a writer for the newspaper…right?” he asked.
”Yeah..hi…I’m Libby Hansen. We’ll be covering the show tonight.” she said.
”Be nice to her, Zulema.” he winked at her walking away.
”That’s an interesting name.” Libby said.
”Yeah. My mom is Arabic..so..yeah.”: Zulema wasn’t sure how to answer the reporter.
”How long have y’all been together? He likes you a lot…I think more than the other girl.”
”Wait..another girl?” she asked. ”The other girl was his sister…”
”Oh…then y’all are recent. The last time he was here he was dating another girl.” Libby said.
”What was she like?” Zulema asked.
”Ummm..well…she was petite…I think she was a dancer…and she had this mega tattoo on her back…but that’s about all I remember…” Libby told her.Oh shit. She sounds hot. I hope she’s not still in the picture.
”When was this?” Zulema asked making sure she wasn’t being played.
”I think it was in March…yeah..like Spring Break time…” Libby answered.
”Oh…okay…” Zulema answered in a quiet tone.
”When did y’all get together?” Libby asked.
”Like a little before that…” Zulema answered.
”Nana! He did that to you! Oh my god. What an ass.” Noe answered.
”Were you mad at him?” Miley responded to the revalation.
”I was a little angry. I confronted him….”
Zulema let the comments that Libby had made that evening sink in and it made her sick. I would never have even considered dating him had I known he had a girlfriend then. And then he bought me the necklace…and I slept with him….God, I’m an idiot…she thought to herself watching him smile at her through some of his songs. She smiled back, but on the inside she was about to punch him. She walked to the small backstage area after the convert ended sitting on the edge of a step watching them. I shouldn’t be angry though…but still… ”Zuli…what’s wrong?” Phil asked her walking past her with a box in his hand.
”Oh nothing.” she shrugged her shoulders.
”That’s why the two of y’all are good for each other…you don’t hide yor emotions well, girl…” he laughed at her. She stood up walking to the back where he was getting dressed. She didn’t bother to knock on the door barging in the room.
”Woah…Z…you couldn’t wait?” he asked as she closed the door.
”Libby and I had a very interesting conversation…” she raised her eyebrow at him.
”Oh? What did she say?” he asked zipping up his pants. ”Or I could keep them off..”
”No. That won’t be necessary..” she said. ”Were you dating someone when we went out the first time?”
Oh shit. She doesn’t mess around. ”I had every intention of breaking up with Alicia.” he told her moving toward the couch. ”Zulema…please don’t be mad at me…”
”How should I not be mad at you? You played me like a fool, Bruno. I flattered me, you swept me off my feet all while you were with someone else…Bruno…I’m not the homewrecker…”
”Zulema…we were already done..it just wasn’t official…” he told her.
”But Bruno…you were with her when we went out…when we slept together…I would never have done that…I wouldn’t have even said yes..where was she?”
”She lives in LA…she’s a producer…”
”So you still work with her? Like you could see her?” Zulema asked.
”Z…yes…I could see Ali…” he told her.
”Bruno…we’ve been together for a while..why didn’t you tell me?” she asked now more disappointed than anything.
”Alicia and I are done and over. We’re fine…it’s the past. You’re the present, Zulema.” he told her.
”But you didn’t break up because of what we did…did you?…Bruno…come on…” Zulema asked waiting for an answer. ”Bru Please don’t tell me that what happened between us was just an excuse for the two of you to break up….”
”It was going to happen…no matter what…” he told her. ”We were going in different directions…”
”I don’t know Bruno…I don’t know what to think about it…and then you could see her…and I’m in New York..how do I trust you?”
He sat next to her in silence not sure how to answer her. She stood up walking toward the door. ”Maybe if I get drunk enough I’ll forgive you.” she said walking out the door.
