When I woke up, Bruno was next to me. He was snoring. I couldn't help but smile. I
tried to get up to take a shower, but he was holding my hand. He wouldn't let go.
"Bruno?" I asked quietly. Nothing. I shook his shoulder. Still nothing.
"Bruno." I said in his ear. Again, nothing. Man, this guy sleeps like a dead person.
Then, I got an idea. I smiled. I moved myself closer to him. I put my other hand on his
cheek and kissed the corner of his mouth. His eyes shot open. He looked at me, his
eyes looked lifeless, as if he were still asleep.
"Good morning." I whispered, sitting up. He rubbed his eyes, and said the same thing.
He was still holding on to my hand.
"May I go take a shower?" I said. He laughed at me.
"Why are you asking me?" he said, still laughing. I looked down at our hands. He
looked down as well.
"Oh. Sorry." he said. He smiled, pulled my hand up to his lips, and kissed it. Then, he
let go. I smiled back and headed to the bathroom. I forgot to tell him something.
"Bruno, I would make you breakfast but I have absolutely no food or anything in the
kitchen." I said, shrugging.
"Its fine," he said, going back to sleep.
I took some clothes into the bathroom with me and took a shower. I spent at least an
hour in there.
When Daisy kissed the corner of my mouth, I really wished I could have continued to
pretend that I was still asleep. If I did, maybe she would have kissed me a little bit
more to the left. Daisy was in the shower right now. She told me she didn't have any
food in her kitchen, so I put it on myself to buy her some. I got a paper and pen and
wrote, "Be right back," on it, just in case she got out before I got back. I set it on the
bed. I put on my shirt and shoes, and headed out the door. I took her key just in case.
I made way to the grocery store closest to Daisy's apartment. It was maybe a minute
away. I walked in the store and threw anything I think she needed inside the cart.
"BRUNZ!" Phil came running up behind me. He scared the shit out of me. I was in the
cereal aisle, and when he screamed, I threw the box I had in my hands in the air.
Luckily, I caught it when it came back down. "Where the fuck were you last night?"
he said, laughing, "Even though I kind of already have an idea." "I went on my date with Daisy." I said.
"How'd it go?"
"Best first date of my life."
"And where'd you sleep???" Phil watched me intently.
"At Daisy's apartment."
"Did you get some?" he said, studying my face. I glared at him.
"I believe you. And for the sake of my money, don't have sex in the next week.
Please." We started walking toward the junk food aisle. Phil had a basket full of
"What are you talking about?"
"Shit," he said under his breath. "Ari and I made a bet. If you and Daisy have sex in
less then a week, he gets $500. After that week is over, I win." I started laughing.
"What the fuck is so funny?! My money is at stake!" he yelled. People started staring
at him. "Sorry!" he said to them, embarrassed.
"Daisy and I were talking about you guys shaking hands last night. I guessed it was a
bet on how long it would take me to ask her to be my girlfriend. She guessed it was
for long it would take us to have sex." I smiled.
"Smart woman." Phil said. I nodded. We ended up not getting any junk food.
20 MINUTES LATER
I paid for all the food. Even Phil's cookies. All $25 worth of it. I bought all the
essentials, like eggs and milk. I spent at least $200. But it was all worth it. On our way
out to the car, I remembered something. When Daisy said she had nothing, she really
had nothing. No plates, cups, silverware, or pots and pans. I told Phil, and he told me
to go to Sears. He went into the store and bought everything. I gave him my credit
card. I was excited when he got back. We put everything in the trunk and headed to
her apartment. Phil agreed to help me put everything away. When we got there, we
made made three trips bringing everything to the 10th floor. It had been half an hour
since Daisy went into the bathroom. She could be out any minute. Phil put all the food
away. I rinsed and dried all the plates, silverware, and cups, and put them in the
cabinet. I took the pots and pans out of the boxes. I didn't know where the hell they
went. Phil didn't either. So I just set them in the oven so she wouldn't see them. Then,
we heard the water stop running. We looked at each other and picked up our pace. We
were done about a minute later. I thanked Phil and he headed out. He took a bag of
cookies I had bought for Daisy with him. I went back to the bedroom, and jumped out
the bed. I took off my shirt and shoes. I was laying there for maybe ten minutes. I heard the bathroom door open and I closed my eyes.
When I was almost done with my shower, I was pretty sure I heard pots and pans. But
I thought nothing of it. Maybe it was my next door neighbor. I got out of the shower
and threw on white skinny jeans and a black tank top. I thought about possibly calling
Presley so we could go to the mall. I put my wet hair in a bun and walked out.
Bruno turned around and saw me.
"You look beautiful," he told me. I blushed and thanked him. He wouldn't stop
staring. Just like in the airplane. "Would you like breakfast?" he continued.
"Sure. Where are we going?" I asked.
"Your kitchen." he stood up, put his shirt and shoes on, and walked out of the room.
""What did you do?!" I asked, following. When I got to the kitchen. All the cabinets
and the refrigerator were open, revealing the food and everything else. Bruno was
standing there, with a smirk on his face. I just smiled, this man was so nice to me. He
was my first friend here in Hawaii. He treated me like family.
"Thank you Bruno," I said, walking up to him. I gave him a hug. His cologne was
really strong. "You sure saved me a lot of shopping time." We stood there, hugging,
for what felt like an eternity. But I wasn't complaining. And I'm sure Bruno wasn't
either, or else he would have pulled away. I ended up pulling away and he was
smiling. "How much do I owe you?" I said, reaching for my wallet.
"Absolutely nothing." he said. I glared at him.
"Are you sure?"
ONE HOUR AND A HALF LATER
Bruno and I made and ate our breakfast together. He made a mess, but he helped me
"Daisy, I have your guitar at my parents' house. Do you want to go get it?" he asked
me. Honestly, I forgot about it when I met him. But I said yes, because we'd spend
more time together.
"Sure. Hold on." I said, running toward my room. I threw on my purple converse, and
my mirror aviator glasses. I picked up my phone and apartment key, and we headed
In the car, Bruno stole my glasses and put them on himself.
"They look so much better on me." he said, looking at himself through the rearview mirror.
"No, they don't." I said. "I think Ray Ban Wayfarers would look better on you." He
looked at me.
"You think so? I don't think I could afford them."
"Said the guy that bought all the stuff that's in my kitchen." I smiled. I instantly knew
of one thing I was going to buy at the mall with Presley. 'Jailhouse Rock' started
playing on the radio. We both started singing. Bruno was more serious about it. He, at
one point, curled up his lip. I started laughing. He did as well.
"Presley asked me yesterday if I wanted to go shopping with her." I smiled. He looked
"Presley sure loves having shopping buddies." he said in a girly voice. I started
At this point, we were about to cross an intersection. Little did we know, there was a
semi on our right with brake failures. Then I saw it.
"Bruno..." I said, calmly. I didn't want to freak him out. He saw it. Instantly, this felt
like a scene in an action movie.
When Bruno saw the semi, he took my hand. He floored it, trying to get us out of the
way. We were about to clear the semi, but then it hit the back. The car spun around, a
perfect 180. The whiplash made my arm hit the closed window and actually break it.
There was blood everywhere. I couldn't stand the sight of blood. I started screaming
with my eyes closed. I heard Bruno yelling my name and telling me everything was
going to be alright. The pain started to catch up with me. I'm pretty sure I fainted.
AN HOUR LATER
I woke up in the hospital, with an indescribable pain in my arm. I was in surgery. I
wasn't given enough anesthesia. I felt every single shard of glass being removed from
my arm. I felt every single time the steel needle entered and left my skin. And I
couldn't do anything about it. I tried to scream, but I couldn't. I started freaking out.
The only thing I could do was take the pain and suffer.
An hour after that, I woke up. I guess I fell asleep after the surgery, or I was given
some pain killers that made me sleepy. My arm didn't hurt as much anymore, but it
still hurt. The pain I felt during the surgery would stay with me forever. I started
looking around, and I was alone. Where was Bruno? At that very moment, a doctor
walked in and told me everything.
"When your arm hit the window, seventeen shards of glass were lodged into it. Some
pieces were so deep in your arm, we had to perform surgery. You have a total of 42
stitches in your arm right now. You will be able to leave after we bandage your arm,
and you will be given medications, pain killers and antibiotic ointment. I could
prescribe you sleeping pills, if you would like." "Please?" I said, very quietly. The doctor nodded. He wrote on a paper and handed it
to me. I thanked him, and he made his way out. Right after the doctor left, Bruno
made his way in. He was looking at the floor the whole time. He didn't look at me
once. He took his hat off, then ran his fingers through his hair.
"I'm so sorry. So, so, so, so, so sorry. Words can't even describe how sorry I am." he
said, still not looking at me.
"For what?" I said. His head snapped up. He looked angry.
"Daisy, look at your fucking arm!!" he yelled. I did as he said. I looked back at him.
He was pacing.
"Bruno," I said sadly. He looked over at me. I moved over and patted the open space
in my bed next to me. He walked over and sat. He took my hand. I continued, "I
should be thanking you." He looked at me, confused.
"Daisy..." he said.
"Bruno, stop. I wasn't done." I said. "If you hadn't sped up that car, my death would
have been certain. You could have been dead, too. If I have to walk around for the rest
of my life with scars up and down my arm, then so be it. Bruno, these cuts are
absolutely NOTHING compared to death." I sighed and looked at him. He looked
back. He knew I was right.
"Thank you, Bruno." I put one of my hands on the side of his face. I don't know what
happened to me but I liked it. My hand slipped to the back of his head. I ran my
fingers through his hair. He looked at me seductively. He leaned his head toward
mine. Our noses brushed against each other. Just as we were about to kiss, the nurse
walked in. Bruno jumped out of my bed and stood there awkwardly. I was smiling
inside. The nurse was here to bandage my arm. As she did, she told me to change it
every other day, and to not forget to use the ointment everyday. If I didn't, the cuts
would be more prone to infection and the scars they left behind would be more
noticeable. I nodded, I wasn't really paying attention. I was just thinking about kissing
Bruno. His lips looked so soft. I really wanted to feel them on mine. Then the nurse
told me I could go. I thanked her, and practically ran out. Bruno followed. I could hear
him laughing. We walked out of the hospital hand in hand. It was still light out. Bruno
and I acted as if the crash didn't happen, and we headed to his parents' house for my
guitar. When we got there, Phil and Ari were in the the living room, watching TV.
Phil saw my arm and stood up.
"What happened?!" We told him everything. Ari didn't seem that interested. I then
convinced Bruno to stay with Phil and Ari to work on their music while I went to the
mall with Presley.
45 MINUTES LATER
"Daisy, honestly, I have never seen Bruno so happy with someone in such a short
amount of time." Presley said, looking through the sunglasses in the store. That
reminded me... "And I've never been happier." I said smiling, heading toward an employee at the
"Excuse me, but would you happen to have Ray Ban Wayfarers?" I said. The young
lady looked at me.
"Let me check." she came back about a minute later. "These are our last pair." She
handed them to me and smiled.
"Thank you so much." I smiled at her and walked away.
THREE HOURS LATER.
I could no longer stand on my feet. Presley didn't buy as much stuff as I did. She took
me to my apartment, and helped me with the bags because of my arm. She told me she
would come back tomorrow to see me try on my new clothes. She left and I threw
myself on the couch.
"What's wrong?" I stood and walked over to where the voice was coming from. Bruno
was in my bedroom, in my bed, watching TV. It surprisingly didn't freak me out that
he was in there.
"I forgot to buy my medications." I said, staring at my arm. I was leaning against the
"Oh, you mean those?" He nodded once toward my dresser. There was a small paper
bag. I smiled.
"You're a lifesaver. Thank you." He smiled. I suddenly remembered his glasses.
"Don't move. I bought you something!" i said, backing away.
"Didn't plan on it." I heard him say. I ran back to the living room and started looking
through the bags. It was in the very last bag I checked. Of course. I took the case and
hid it behind my back. I skipped into the room. Bruno was laughing. I jumped on the
bed and looked at him.
"Close your eyes."
"You're ruining this for me. Just do it!" He laughed and he did. I took the glasses out
of the case and put them on him.
"Can I open them now?"
"No!" I laughed. I pulled him off the bed and put my hands over the glasses to make
sure he wasn't peeking. I pushed him toward the mirror. I removed my hands. "Okay. Open." I couldn't tell by his eyes if he had opened them, but I could by his
facial expression. It was priceless. I wished I could have taken a picture.
"You were right. These do look better on me." he said, looking at his face at every
"I'm always right." I replied, heading back to the bed. I threw myself on it. I was so
"Thank you so much, Daisy."
"My pleasure," I mumbled. I fell asleep.
Daisy fell asleep instantaneously. I thought it was funny because it was still light out. I
took one last look at myself in the mirror, and headed over to Daisy. I wanted to ask
her if she would go on a second date with me, but I obviously couldn't right now. I
kissed her forehead, and let myself out.
I headed back to my parents' house to help Phil and Ari with our new song. It was
called "Just The Way You Are". I wanted Daisy to be the first person I sang it to. I just
had to wait for the moment to sing it. When I got there, Phil and Ari were waiting for
me on the front porch. While getting out of the car, I heard them talking.
"Dude, you basically already lost the bet. Just save yourself time and give me the
money. I have stuff I wanna buy before we leave." Phil said.
"No I haven't! We still have a day left. They could do it by then." Ari replied. Then,
they saw me. They both looked down. I could tell they were hiding something from
"What the fuck are you talking about?" I said, angrily.
"You haven't checked at your phone, have you?" Ari said, still looking down.
"Look at it." Phil told me. At least he looked at me. I did as he said. I had a voicemail.
It was from Aaron. He usually only calls to tell us that someone wants us to help
produce their tracks. I looked at them. They looked sad for me. I listened to it. I put in
on speaker, since they already knew what it was about.
"Hey, Bruno. We need the Smeezingtons to head to London for a month. We got you
a couple of groups to work with. You might want to start packing. I got you all a flight for the day after tomorrow. I'll see you at the airport." I deleted it right away. I rubbed
my forehead. Fuck. I didn't want to leave Daisy. Especially now, because of the
accident. I thought of asking her to come with me, but that would be a little much,
since we just met. I didn't know what to do.
I didn't sleep in my hotel. My parents let me sleep in my old bedroom. This place
brought back memories. Good and bad. It was the exact same way I left it six years
ago. I fell asleep thinking about Daisy. I woke up at 6:30 thinking about Daisy. I just
couldn't get her off my damn mind. I got up and headed for my car. I woke up with the
intention of going to her apartment and telling her how I felt. I was going to tell her,
and if she didn't feel the same way, well, then, I don't know...
When I woke up, it was seven in the morning. 13 hours of sleep. I felt great. I noticed
Bruno wasn't next to me. I was getting attached to him really quick. It was probably
really awkward for him. I don't know if he felt the same way about me. It's like I've
known him for my whole life. I could be myself around him. I smiled just thinking
about him. I sat up, yawned, and rubbed my eyes. Then, I heard a knock on my door.
Bruno. I ripped the sheet off of me, jumped out of my bed and ran for the door,
knocking stuff over on the way. I stopped in front of the door and tried to fix my hair
and straighten out my clothes. I was so excited to see him. He made me feel complete.
Like my heart found my reason for living. I opened the door. His beautiful face
greeted me. He was wearing the glasses I bought him. We both smiled.
"Good morning, Daisy."
"Good morning, Bruno."
"Could I, uh, talk to you?" he said, looking at the floor, playing around with his keys.
At this point, I got very nervous. I thought of the worst.
"Sure. Come in." I moved out of the way and he made his way to the couch. He didn't
sit down. I closed the door and locked it. Still facing the door, I took a deep breath. I
turned around and walked over to the couch. He motioned for me to sit down. I did,
then he took a seat. He still wasn't looking at me. He took off his glasses and sighed.
"Daisy..." he said. We didn't say anything for what seemed like hours. "Shit, this is
harder than I thought it would be. Alright, here I go..." he continued. My smile slowly
faded. My heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. I'm pretty sure I was
sweating. "Daisy, I'm in love with you. And I knew I was in love when I saw you at
the gates in the Denver airport while you were looking at your phone. I know we
haven't known each other for that long, but I am sure that I can no longer live my life
without you." I was shocked. On the inside, I was at an all time high. It felt like a huge
weight was lifted off my shoulders. On the outside, I was as expressionless as a brick
wall. He looked at me. My face expression didn't change. I don't think this was the
answer he was looking for. His eyes slowly turned red. He stood up and started
walking toward the door.
"I'm gonna go now." he said. His voice cracked. I stood up. What I was putting him
through was fucking horrible. "Bruno." I said. I took a deep breath. I was trying to keep myself from crying. I saw
his hand go to his face. Probably to wipe away tears. He turned around. His eyes were crimson red, tears streaming down his face like waterfalls. I hated seeing other people
cry. "Bruno, I'm in love with you, too." I said. I forced a smile as I walked up to him.
He met me halfway. He grabbed my face and looked at me with eyes that were hard to
explain. He looked sad, but happy. Relieved, but stressed out. I put my hands on his as
he leaned his forehead on mine. Then, he pulled me closer and pressed his lips on
mine. Next thing I know, our tongues are playing around in each others' mouths.
Simultaneously, I jumped and wrapped my legs around him, threw my arms around
his neck, and he wrapped his arms around my waist to hold me up. We didn't miss a
single kiss. He started walking toward my bedroom when I thought I heard someone
knocking. I sucked on his tongue, fucking hard, and pulled his hair lightly. He moaned
loudly. The knocking I thought I heard turned into pounding. I stopped kissing Bruno
abruptly and looked at him. He looked at me. He put me down and ran his hands up
my back slowly. I shivered. He ran his fingers through my hair and kissed me softly. I
smiled and kissed him back. He took my hand and we headed to the door.
"I love you, Daisy." he told me.
"I love you, Bruno." I said, looking at him and reaching for the doorknob. I kissed him
once again and bit my lip. I opened the door.
My smiling face slowly lost it's emotion. I forgot about everything that had happened
to me just now and in the last few days. I didn't know what to do. I stared at him, my
eyes wide open. I let go of Bruno's hand, but he held on. I felt like I was looking at a
ghost. He stared back, with his hazel eyes. He had the same look on his face, but it
looked like he hadn't slept.
Daisy was big part of my life. I didn't know how she could do this to me. I was the
shoulder she had to cry on when she needed it. I had been her best friend since I was a
junior in high school and she was a freshman. I wanted to be there for her for the rest
of my life. She was like the younger sister I never had.
When I went to pick her up for lunch, she wasn't at her house. I didn't panic though.
After three hours of waiting and calling her phone nonstop without her picking up, I
walked into her room and looked in her closet. The suitcase she hid in the back wasn't
there. She didn't know that I knew about it. Then, I looked on her bed. The bear that
her mother gave to her when she was four wasn't there. I suddenly remembered
something that I had always wanted to forget. Her dad had told me that he put a
microchip in the bear, just in case she ran away so he could find her and teach her a
lesson. I winced just thinking about it. I guess Daisy never noticed the fucked up
stitching on the back of the bear. I walked over to her laptop and logged in to the
microchip's company's website. A big black screen came up with "TRACKING" in
big white letters.
A map of the world showed up. Then, it slowly started zooming in. To Hawaii. I was
shocked. Why the hell would she go there? She hated the heat. She would always
complain when it was hotter than 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, I smiled. You have to
give credit where credit is due. She was really smart. The website gave me an address and I headed to the airport.
When I got to the airport, the lady told me there were no open flights until three in the
morning on Saturday. Of course. I would get to Hawaii at seven, Hawaii time. I had
no choice but to take it.
I came back to the airport Friday night. I had no luggage. I didn't plan on staying a
whole day. I boarded the plane and took my seat. I wondered how Daisy would handle
EIGHT HOURS LATER
I got off the plane as quickly as I could. I got to a taxi and handed him the paper with
the address on it. Five minutes later, he stopped in front of some apartments. I paid
him, and stepped out. I thought finding her was going to be a pain in the ass, until I
saw the landlord. As I was walking toward him, I looked into the open elevator. There
was a short guy with curly hair looking at the floor. He took off his glasses and rubbed
his forehead. I felt bad for him. I went to the landlord and told him that my sister,
Daisy, lived here and she told me to come visit but she didn't tell me the apartment.
He smiled and told me 17D on the tenth floor. I thanked him and headed for the
The elevator hit the 10th floor and I stepped out. I put my hands in my pockets and
walked to the end of the hallway. I stood at the door of 17D for a minute and knocked.
I heard someone moan. Daisy's growing up. I'm pretty sure I threw up a little in my
mouth. I pounded on the door a few times and stopped. I felt awkward just being here.
I was about to leave when I heard a familiar voice say: "I love you, Bruno." Daisy. At
that moment, I knew I was at the right place at the wrong time. Daisy opened the door.
I stared. Her eyes were darker and her hair was lighter and longer. Her right arm was
bandaged up. I noticed that she was holding someone's hand. I looked at him. He was
the guy from the elevator. He looked at her with eyes of worry. I looked back at Daisy.
She looked happy and scared at the same time.
"Cesar..." she said in her high pitched voice. I couldn't help but smile.
